You have seen people taking selfies all over Instagram about their weight loss journey or making Youtube videos documenting their progress. And it’s all for the greater good, if you want to lose weight, follow them and start taking those selfies and posting them.
According to an article that was in ScienceDaily, a study that was published in the Journal of Interactive Marketing monitored two weight loss groups over four years and they found out that people who share their progress or their weight loss goals, tend to be more motivated and were able to reach their goals that they have set for themselves.
“The sharing of intimate information and photos about weight loss goals in virtual space is a key factor in motivating behaviours that fulfil that new thinner identity and thus helps people reach their goals,” says Dr Sonya A. Grier, professor of marketing in the American University Kogod School of Business.
By having virtual support communities, which will then motivate public commitment to support goal compliance behaviours. Simply speaking, moral support is much more effective than doing it alone, for people that want to lose weight, and it will also result in faster results, as you won’t be stopping and restarting all the time.
Then again, not everyone is comfortable showing or presenting themselves online, well, it doesn’t matter. Even by remaining anonymous, or whichever way you want to present your weight loss journey, it will still help by sharing your progress with the virtual community as it will keep you more accountable and motivated.
“Not everyone can get the support they need from the people they interact with in person on a daily basis. It is helpful that technology can support community building and goal achievement in virtual spaces,” added Dr Sonya A. Grier
What are you waiting, if you want to lose weight faster, or even if you just want to stick to your New Year’s Resolution goals, start taking those selfies. Be it at the gym, your weighing scale, progress pics or whatever setbacks or hiccups you encountered. Oh, and don’t forget to post them, aside from the fact that you may get Insta-famous, you may be motivating others to continue their weight loss journey. In any case, it’s still better than walking this journey alone. Happy snapping!
