Melvin Chua, 25
THE WAKE-UP CALL
When he enlisted into national service with the Singapore Police Force after graduation, Melvin was assigned to go through the extended six months of basic training. His active lifestyle and controlled diet while at camp led him to lose 10kg. Unfortunately, after he got posted out, he gained 4kg. “I already achieved so much while at camp,” says Melvin. “I wasn’t going to let all my effort go to waste.”
Melvin was fortunate enough to have been taught how to cook by his father, a kitchen assistant. “I enjoy cooking, and it was easier to control my diet by cooking and packing my own food from home,” he says. He experimented with techniques like grilling and steaming, and tried out recipes that had low-carb and high-fibre ingredients.
While rowing with the dragon boat team provided strength and endurance training, he felt it was not sufficient, as the sessions were only once a week. He supplemented this by going to the gym three times a week, and running on the treadmill to build up his cardiovascular endurance.
With his new look, Melvin noticed he has been getting more attention from the ladies. “It’s nice to finally have girls smiling back at me when I smile at them,” he says. It also helps that he’s surrounded by a bevy of women in his class in university. “I’m kind of spoilt for choice now!” he says. His next target: Losing 3kg more.
