The Wake-Up Call
“I felt truly humiliated when my boss told me he didn’t think I could ever pass my fitness test,” he says. While that was a hard pill to swallow, the real kick in the butt came when he was left breathless after climbing a short flight of stairs at the office – resulting in chest pains. “I decided to buck up for the sake of my health. Also, it would be nice to make my boss eat his words.”
At the end of 2010, Chris attacked his problem by dieting and exercising. He became more careful with his choice of food, and even started preparing his own healthy meals. That meant avoiding food rich in carbohydrates and those with a high glycaemic index. Soft drinks and tidbits were off the menu, too. For exercise, he began with easy-to-manage walk/jogs on a daily basis, but quickly ramped up his mileage as well as run intensity.
Chris sticks to low-fat, wholegrain food. He also opts for lean meat such as chicken breast, low-fat milk, eggs and lots of vegetables.
He works out five to six days a week. Each time, he packs two workout sessions daily – once before work and the other after. His sets include short runs, cycling and swims. Weekends are reserved for long bike rides or runs.
