When cheating in a relationship happens, and when asked about sex, most people who claim that they do not have a good sex life, which leads them to find a new partner. Ironically, this may not be the case.
According to an article published in the Independent, a study done by researchers from Florida State University found out that, based on a three-year-long analysis of marital behaviours between 233 newlyweds, people who were having a good sex life are the ones most likely to be cheating in a relationship. This was because they “felt more positive about sex in general”.
Does that mean you should no longer have sex or even perform “badly” in bed to keep your partners by your side? There are still many factors determining if cheating in a relationship will happen.
Besides having a good sex life, different ages, looks and sexual history of both men and women play a role in why they cheat as well. Women who were younger and less good-looking were found to be more likely to cheat, while men, on the other hand, cheated when their partners were less attractive. Men that have more short-term sexual relationships and a good sex life were more likely to be cheating in a relationship compared to their female counterparts.
Despite all this, people can still have great sex and stay committed to each other.
According to the research, there are two innate behaviours that people adopt which will minimise the chances of cheating in a relationship.
Those who can avoid, stop thinking about their potential cheating partner, and downplay their attractiveness will make them less likely to cheat.
“People are not necessarily aware of what they’re doing or why they’re doing it. These processes are largely spontaneous and effortless, and they may be somewhat shaped by biology and/or early childhood experiences.” said researcher Jim McNulty.
Though they are all done without awareness at this point in time, there is still research going on showing people can actually control this nature and use it when being tempted.
So, before you manage to control this innate ability, to prevent cheating, should you not have a good sex life? Definitely not. Having great sex can still result in a better relationship.
While cheating in a relationship does happen time to time, sexual satisfaction is only one of the reasons why people do it. There are many other contributing factors that cause it as well.
With Valentine’s Day approaching, don’t hold back, show your love to them. Both in and outside of bed.
