So, the World Cup is finally upon us, and in taxis, MRT trains, kopi tiams and office water coolers folks are chatting about which team might win. Haven’t been following international soccer that much in recent years? Here’s a quick sum up of who your fellow Singaporean’s are supporting and expecting to lift the trophy, as well as interesting factoids a survey by Milieu Insight, a market research company found after a survey of 1134 local football fans.
Which Team To Win?
According to their findings Germany are not only firm favs to win the trophy, but also the best supported team in Singapore! 25% of those surveyed predicted a German win while samba kings Brazil popped in a distant second at 15%. Fans of the BPL clearly didn’t rate England though- they came in third with Spain in terms of fan-base in Singapore.
The Golden Boot?
Of course, Cristiano Ronaldo. 29% of respondents believe he will be top scorer, with Argentine and Barcelona rival Lionel Messi at 16%. MVP-wise 24% believe the Portuguese will be the most important player versus 20% for Messi. Clearly there’s a lot more CR7 fans locally!
The Salah Question
Will Mo Salah, star forward for Liverpool, actually make the World Cup after that horrible arm-twist by you-know-who of Spain and Real Madrid? Well making it is one thing but getting back to form is another, but 5% of respondents believe he can win the Golden Boot AND Ball. Our guess? Die-hard Liverpool fans, of course!
To Stream Or Not To Stream
First things first- we’re not advocating anything illegal here. But the stats show that 59% of fans will be watching the games via free online streaming links, and 66% of followers indicated they refused to subscribe to a service provider to watch the 2018 World Cup. And this crossed household income levels, which means.. Singtel, Starhub might want have a rethink about how they’re winning hearts and minds of football fans in Singapore.
Late night games mean late night snacking- but not too much hor. 57% of fans admitted definitely needing food deliveries, with 61% going for traditional favourites Macdonalds- we’ve tried that Pizza Ball thing and its actually surprisingly good and healthy, as it’s lean chicken meat with a dosh of marinara sauce within.
Beer, lah. 50% said so. The rest… are bluffing. (We kid, we kid.)
