Ok, so if you’ve been living under a rock for most of this decade- Game of Thrones is a big thing. And lets face it, us guys have a lot to thank the show for, especially for it’s Netflix and chill properties (yes, we know it’s on HBO, but you get what we mean, lads.)
As part of the conclusion to the saga, alcohol giants Diageo have partnered with various whiskey houses to come up with eight unique scotches paired with one of the iconic Houses of Westeros, as well as The Night’s Watch. Drawing inspiration from the Seven Kingdoms, each whisky represents an authentic taste of both the Seven Kingdoms and Scotland. From the power of water between both House Tully and The Singleton of Glendullan to the legendary women behind House Targaryen and Cardhu, or the royal lineage of House Baratheon and Royal Lochnagar, each whisky highlights a distinct character.
Some background of each whiskey as below:
GAME OF THRONES HOUSE TULLY- THE SINGLETON GLENDULLAN SELECT: Utilizing a mix of refill and rejuvenated casks in the recipe, the liquid has a good balance between the fresh fruity Glendullan spirit and spice and vanilla from the cask. SRP: S$75
GAME OF THRONES HOUSE STARK – DALWHINNIE WINTER’S FROST: A delicious maltiness and rich fruit cake finish that amplifies the spicy character of the liquid. SRP: S$89
GAME OF THRONES HOUSE TARGARYEN – CARDHU GOLD RESERVE: A rich caramel character with hints of clove, red apple and a gentle nuttiness. SRP: S$73.5
RATED BEST: GAME OF THRONES HOUSE LANNISTER – LAGAVULIN 9 YEAR OLD: Matured in a 100% ex bourbon cask, giving the whisky a powerful vanilla sweetness with smoky character. SRP: S$105
GAME OF THRONES THE NIGHT’S WATCH – OBAN BAY RESERVE: Aged in a combination of refill and double-charred casks, the liquid combines a wonderful crème caramel with a wisp of charred Oak. SRP: S$108
GAME OF THRONES HOUSE GREYJOY – TALISKER SELECT RESERVE: A whisky with a great depth of flavor starting off with a smoky fruit cake of spice and finishing off with a long and complex character of leather. SRP: S$75
GAME OF THRONES HOUSE BARATHEON – ROYAL LOCHNAGAR 12 YEAR OLD: Possesses light notes of oak and sweet Liquorice that develop into a rich, creamy vanilla coffee and finishing off with a mild nutmeg custard flavour. S$120
GAME OF THRONES HOUSE TYRELL – CLYNELISH RESERVE: Bursting with fresh tropical fruits into a creamy vanilla character, the finish is with a delicate floral note. SRP: S$138
So, which did we think gave the best bang for buck? Our votes on the House Lannister bottle- the Lagavulin 9 year old. If a Lannister always pays his debts, maybe ask for it in Lagavulin, one of the best smokey whiskeys you can find from Islay.
That explosive smoke pairs well with the medieval show, and we loved the banana and vanilla flavor that ends with a caramel finish. Pity about how it turned out for Cersei (we’re guessing!). Oh, and going back to the best part- there’s eight more other whiskeys in the collection to work through as you rewatch the rest of the seasons during your Netflix and chill sessions! A satisfying sip when the final episode finally ends for sure.
