Having aged parents is a challenge for most Singaporeans who have to juggle work and their own families. It gets even tougher when your parents don’t stay with you- while regular calls and visits do help, there’s always the fear that something happens to them when you’re not around, and you can’t get to them in time, especially in cases where they slip and fall, or suffer strokes and heart attacks.
We’ve been wondering when tech would come up with a viable solution for this, and Apple’s latest smartwatch, their Watch Series 4, becomes your eyes and ears in your parent’s household- at least, from a health perspective.
The watch can track their heartbeats, inform you of an irregular heart rhythm, or a sharp rise and fall in heart rate.
In addition, it also can detect any hard falls that might occur and send a notification to the users which can initiate a call to emergency services if necessary. This function is an evolution of the Apple Watch’s SOS feature, which has saved lives before.
Casey Bennett, a fifth-year psychology student at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County, was driving home from school, when another vehicle crashed into the side of his Jeep Patriot. Suddenly, he was turned sideways, and his smashed Patriot was lying in the road.
Bennett, however, had an ace up his sleeve—or, rather, on his wrist.“I remembered my watch,” he says, matter-of-factly. His Apple Watch, that is. As he explains, if you hold its Side Button down for about six seconds, it activates the device’s SOS feature, which, after you then swipe the Emergency SOS, will call EMS, and send text messages to your emergency contacts. From there, Bennett spoke with 911 from his watch until first-responders (and his father) arrived. It was his first time using the feature, but it went off without a hitch.
In the case of the new Apple Watch Series 4, if it senses immobility for 60 seconds, it will automatically call emergency services and send a message along with the location to emergency contacts.
Despite the high price tag, it is definitely worth the investment to protect the safety of your loved ones. It also makes a nice birthday gift to celebrate their prosperity and long life!
