Does our increasing reliance on technology come at the expense of our health? Daily use of your mobile phone, tablets and computers may be causing your body harm, even in ways you don’t realise. These health threats range from mild annoyances like wrist strains to more severe risks like infertility. Find out what potential hazard you’re putting yourself through and how to protect yourself.
Health Problems: Repetitive Strain Injuries
Clicking through mountains of Excel spreadsheets can leave you groaning in more ways than one, thanks to repetitive stress injuries (RSI). “Stretching to operate a mouse is an increasingly common cause of RSI,” says Tim Hutchful, a UK-based chiropractor. Clicking away for just 30 hours a week increases the chance of forearm pain by eight times, according to a Danish study.
Health Problem: Poor Sleep
Switch off all your phones, computers or tablet devices in your bedroom half hour before bedtime and hopefully you’ll wake up the next morning more rested.
Health Problems: Infertility, Hearing Loss, Mini Stroke
Health Problem: Blurred Vision, Eye Fatigue
Think about it – you stare at your tiny smartphone on the way to the office, where you then proceed to stare at your computer monitor for another eight to nine hours in between bouts of furious typing and mouse manoeuvring. Then you head home (staring at your e-reader so as to avoid making eye contact with other passengers) where you spend the rest of the night basking in the glow of your 50-inch LED television set.
