  • How did you get into fitness and how long have you been working out?
2 / 10 How did you get into fitness and how long have you been working out?

I have been into fitness for 9 years. To be honest, the reason why I started wasn’t due to me wanting to have six pack or big biceps. Rather, it was for me to de-stress as I went through my first breakup. Well they say breakups makes bodybuilders, and it’s quite true to some extent.

  • How's life like showing your fitness life on Instagram?
3 / 10 How's life like showing your fitness life on Instagram?

To be honest, there isn’t much of a change as I’m not a very social media-driven person. I just post what I want to show and that’s about it. Unlike many of my friends who treat it as a “every day have to post to get followers” kind of thing, and end up stressing on the captions, I just post whenever I feel like it.

But I have to say that I get business and collaboration [opportunities] from there, such as this opportunity that you guys are providing. I just want to spread a kind of positive energy and fitness inspiration to more people who happen to chance upon my profile.

  • What does your instagram name mean?
4 / 10 What does your instagram name mean?

Funny story: Back in my polytechnic days, I didn’t have the name Ryan. My Chinese name is Shi Ming. I have friends who find it difficult to pronounce it so they ended up calling me names like “shimmering” and “shims”. At that point of time I found “Shims” catchy and even used it as my call sign in army.

However, it was only when I was in University that I noticed my friends calling me “Shims” even without prior knowledge to that name, and I thought it’s something unique to me. Thus during the creation of my instagram name and company name when “RyanFitness/RC Fitness” were taken or too well-established, “ShimsFitness” became my next choice. Since then, people who know me either call me Shims or Ryan.

  • What's your usual diet like?
    8 / 10 What's your usual diet like?

My principle in fitness has always been sustainability, thus I do not do anything that is too out of my way including my diet. I basically eat whatever I want even when I prepare for competition as I have a high metabolism, thus I do not get weight easily. But with that being said, I still watch the amount of unhealthy food I eat such as fast food or poultry with skin.

  • How do you stay motivated?
9 / 10 How do you stay motivated?

As it is my job to motivate my clients, motivation comes vice versa. I have to keep in shape for them to be their role model. Also, I crave for knowledge with regards to anything fitness related thus allowing me to keep growing my love for fitness in depth. This is the reason why I’m not only just a Certified Personal Trainer, but also a Sports Nutritionist, Health Coach and a Corrective Exercise Specialist and all my work are related to fitness, which I enjoy a lot.

One last thing is that I try to make it a point to compete every year, to see how my progress is and it allows me to have a clear goal as to where I want to be and how I want to improve my physique, planning my workout routine accordingly. I feel that these yearly goals have allowed me to improve myself over the years.
