Treat yourself today and serve your upper body a big helping of the sweet stuff.
We’re not actually talking desserts, here—instead, take some time out of your workout to add in a tasty bodyweight move that will add an extra dimension to your pullup routine: ice cream makers
Don Saladino, trainer to Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Sebastian Stan and other notable stars, says the exercise is a simple, versatile move that pays off in dividends.
Performing the move is relatively simple. All you need is yourself, a pullup bar, and some hangtime.
Pull yourself up to chin height, then bend your knees to raise your legs to a hanging positions, with your back parallel to the ground. Keep your back straight and your core tight.
Don suggests that you focus on keeping yourself in a strong position throughout the exercise. “Maintain the axis of rotation through your elbows, pull yourself up and keep your knees bent the whole time,” he says. “Focus more on pulling your shoulders towards the bar, and then pushing yourself away from it, in a mix of a biceps curl and a triceps extension.”
That’s just for starters. Once you get better at the move, you can make it more difficult.
“Eventually you can do the same thing with your legs extended,” Don advises, “but initially keep them tucked.”
Give ice cream makers a try by adding four sets of 5 reps to your next upper body workout.
