Brad Robinson, 39, Ritual CEO
Stephanie Bovis, 30, Emcee and actress
“We have very different training philosophies”, starts Brad. “I’m abit of a savage, and like to workout to the death, pretty much.” Stephanie jumps in with an eyeroll, quipping: “ I prefer more mindful moments.” Cue the return eyeroll from Brad.
And that’s just the first minute of our interview with this glamour couple, who extrude a very LA laid-back vibe throughout. You can almost imagine them sitting by Santa Monica pier sharing an acai bowl- which is apparently what they really do in Singapore, just at Holland Village instead.
It helps, of course, that theres an acai bar just opposite the gym Brad runs- Ritual, if you haven’t heard- and also explains why the middle ground to their different workout inclinations end up with body-weight workouts, which is what Ritual specialises in. Some of their shared fitness preferences involve exercise outdoors that don’t use equipment, and since they got a dog they’ve been walking a lot more as well.
Interestingly enough, Stephanie’s yogi advice has been also getting across to Brad. “I have to get him to stretch with me because I know his hips needs it”, shares Stephanie. “He sweats more when he gets into a lizard pose compared to doing deadlifts,” she adds.” The years of MMA haven’t done well for Brad, and yoga does help but he’s been resistant to it. So what’s the secret for relationship and workout bliss? Stephanie has realized that forcing him to try yoga doesn’t work- it’s more about helping him realise what he needs and letting him come to her, rather than nagging.
“I’m resistant to change,” Brad admits. Yoga has helped him- mobility is back and a lot of injuries seem less painful, so clearly he’s starting to see the benefit of it! And one last piece of advice for couples with different fitness vibes trying to get fit together? “Start small,” says Brad. Couples are individuals, so picking a goal that both of you find enjoyment is crucial. “Contributing to each other’s fitness lifestyle also helps,” Stephanie adds. If a couple both know different aspects of fitness, it’s a great way to build the relationship!
Brad and Steph’s Couple Workout
(3 Sets of 10)
Like most pushups, this will work your chest, arms, shoulders and core. The main thing with this variation is to take one hand of the floor and clap your partner’s hand. This is a move about technique and form, so make sure you take it slow and get it right.
Partner Russian Twist
If you’ve got a medicine ball that’s great, if not you can get a weighed backpack and do the exact same thing. The basic movement is the twist. Sit back to back, with your spine nice and tall, and when receiving the weight you inhale, and exhale when you hand it over.
Partners Child Pose & Backbend
Both partners benefit from this pose. The person on the top gets a great chest opener, and the person on the bottom stretches the hips and the spine. Sink and match your tailbones together, and the person on the top slowly rolls their spine over the person at the bottom. Switch sides, take a long of long deep breaths together, and connect.
