Kelly Latimer, 32, sports presenter & emcee
Justin Loi, 33, project manager.
There’s nothing wrong with using a bit of vanity to inspire yourself and the other half to work out.
And it’s not just for the ladies- as Justin admits, his own fitness push came from a desire to look good on his wedding, something most guys will understand.
“A year before our wedding, I decided it was time to start working out- it was a beach wedding, after all. And after we got hitched, somehow the habit stuck,” he shares. Given the couple joke about him being a mail-order groom, obviously he’s had to make sure he maintained the buff physique he has today.
Why mail-order groom? It’s quite an entertaining story, as Kelly shares: “I essentially picked him out of a catalogue.” Justin adds: “My classmate is Kelly’s cousin, and when we went on a school trip together, she stumbled across a pic of me.” Kelly interjects: “I thought you were cute,” and they met at a party some time later, with the rest being history.
They’ve come a long way since then, with the two enjoying parenting now with their two-year-old daughter Sienna, and their fitness lifestyle has since evolved, with teamwork being the key.
“There’s the pre-Sienna and post-Sienna fitness life,” Kelly says. “Justin works out religiously at lunchtime every day, which I admire.
It also means that when we get home in the evenings, Justin is free to help with Sienna and I can get some time to exercise.” “It’s important to know each other’s schedule”, adds Justin.“And wherever possible it’s better if you can work out together. Aside from the health benefits, a lot of it is bonding as well.”
So what to they do? They’re fans of HIIT in the living room, apparently, and getting the kids involved helps. “Sienna knows now when I put on a sports bra, she says ‘Mummy exercise!’,” laughs Kelly. “At the end of the day, if you can put up with your partner’s sweat, you can put up with anything in life,” she concludes.
Kelly and Justin’s Workout
Plank & Pushup
One partner gets in a low plank position with his back nice and stable, and the other goes on top of his back with hands on his shoulder blades and stability, and starting to do pushups. The longer the partner doing the pushups takes, the longer the other partner will have to stay planked! Swap positions after ten pushups.
Bodyweight Row & Deadlift
One partner is in a reverse core position, core engaged, while the other partner does a back row. Retract shoulder blades to get a good squeeze on the back, and change positions after five reps. One partner will go into a reverse plank positon, while the other goes into a deadlift position, thrusting through your heels and squeezing glutes.
Dumbbell Leg raise
Place four dumbbells (or water bottles) lined up in front of both of yourselves. You then take your legs all the way to the left hand side, before alternating bringing your right legs over one bottle, and then bringing
your left leg over to the right hand side. Repeat till you reach the right side of the bottles. Do that for ten reps, leaning back into a 45-degree position. What’s key is to make sure you’re not rounding your back too much.
