It’s a common regret of those who pickup fitness in their later years that they didn’t start earlier, possibly because they could have enjoyed the benefits sooner, or avoided injuries or bad habits that prevent them from reaching their full potential.
For fitness enthusiasts Joshua and Natalie, thankfully, that’s something they’ll never worry about- the couple’s relationship with fitness, like their personal relationship, kicked off in their university days.
“I met Natalie when I was training for my first-ever bodybuilding competition, and she was fascinated by what it’d be like to see me prancing around in a thong,” laughs Joshua.
All that training had him spending a lot of time at the gym, and it influenced Natalie, who shares: “I used to do a lot of yoga classes, and then I figured why not try what he’s doing- he was spending two to three hours daily weight training- so yes, Natty didn’t always lift (her popular Instagram moniker is Nattylifts).”
Today, they’ve graduated far from their university days, with both in fairly time-intensive jobs, so how do they still maintain that fitness lifestyle? “When we were students we had a lot more time to workout and do meal prep, but given time’s a lot more precious, we’ve tried to keep our brand of fitness sustainable,” Joshua says.
What that means is food-wise, they eat clean by picking the right options in the CBD. Natalie shares her fav option is the meat salads from Daily Cut. “I just don’t want to eat boiled chicken breast and broccoli all the time. A lot of folks ask us on Instagram if we eat clean all the time, and that’s not true. We love good food, and Joshua loves BBQ, waffles and pizza!” “We don’t feel guilty about that- it’s all about moderation,” chips in Joshua.
Fitness-wise, they’ve gotten into high intensity interval training (HIIT). “I discovered I really enjoy HIIT. Previously Joshua was really into weight training, but over time he’s found it’s really more than just cardio- now we wake up at 5.30am on weekdays and go workout together.”
“It’s about finding a common activity that both of us enjoy- it helps with sticking to your shared mutual goals,” says Joshua, concluding with: “So I started with weight training, and got Natalie on it; and then she got into HIIT, and got me hooked on it. We’ve come full circle!”
Josh & Nat’s Workout
Wheelbarrow Push-Ups (10 reps each)
For the partner doing the pushups it’s great for the triceps, shoulders and chest. For the partner doing the squats you’re going to work out your core, glutes and quads. The first partner will have their legs on the other partner, keeping your core tight while doing the pushup, and the other doing a wide-stance squat, keeping your upper body upright.
Mountain Climbers Wall Sit (3 rounds of 30, 60 & 90 seconds each)
One partner does mountain climbers and the other does wall sits for this workout. Mountain climbers- make sure your lower back is parallel to the ground, your back is flat and your core is tight. Shoulders should be directly above your wrists, and knees to chest. For the other partner doing the wall sit, your back should be flat against the wall, your thighs parraell to the ground, to make sure you’re using your bum and thighs.
(Subhead) High C- Curved Heart (10 on each side, then swap)
This one’s great for both abs and Instagram boomerangs. Sit on the floor side by side with your partner, lie back on your forearms and round your lower spine. Be sure to hold your belly button down as your move your legs in a half-heart movement. You’ll noticed when you drop your legs a little lower, you work your core a lot more. Make sure to get those perfect curves to get a perfect heart for Valentine’s Day!
