Victoria Cheng, 33, food writer & presenter
Kym Goh, 33, advertising art director
There’s many things popular social media and online presenter Victoria Cheng is passionate about, but two things that’s always easy to get her gabbing about is food and fitness.
So if you ask her boyfriend Kym about the origin story on their relationship, it’s hardly a surprise that the duo first met… at a restaurant. “We met at a dinner with mutual friends three years ago,” he reveals.
They reconnected in 2018, and he joined a boxing class she was a trainer at in an effort to “woo her with my physical prowess”, as he puts it, but given it was a “difficult” class, as he admits, that didn’t come off quite well, though Victoria does offer a “he tried really hard” to offset the ego-bruise.
But here’s what separates the winners and the losers both in love and fitness goals: persistence. “Props for effort, he came back to the boxing class multiple times,” reveals Victoria, “and we’d have a date here and there after the classes.” “Love bloomed from her pity of me and my failure at fitness”, he quips back.
Several months on, both of them have stuck at their fitness regimes, encouraging each other when needed. “It’s funny but when we first started dating, I was on a fitness downswing, working out less than I really wanted, while he was trying to work out more to keep up with me,” she reveals.
“Because it was important to you, I started working out a lot more,” Kym adds. And ultimately that’s also a great way to maintain a healthy relationship in more ways than one, as they both believe it’s better to keep the competitiveness in the gym, rather than at home!
Victoria & Kym’s Workout
One partner will get down to do a plank, making sure their core is nice and stable. The other partner will put their hands on their partner’s shoulders, keeping a constant pressure. You’ll proceed to hop left and right 10 times. With the plank, you’re working your shoulders and core, and your partner hopping is working on their cardiovascular endurance, as well as their core and shoulders too.
(1kg dumbbell for ladies, 2kg dumbbell for guys)
This move will consist of 30 seconds of punching (10 seconds x 3 punch variations). Don’t pick weights that are too heavy in order to maintain good form. The first 10 seconds will be a jab-cross combination, the next 10 seconds will be uppercuts, and finally 10 seconds of hooks. This is a great cardio workout and works your arms, shoulders and back.
This is great for agility and speed training, as well as balance. Get low and bend into a half-squat facing your partner. The aim of the game is to tap your partner’s knees. If your knee gets tapped, you’ll do a five push-up forfeit. The first partner who gets five taps wins.
