Anybody can get a hernia, which is the protrusion of abdominal contents through a weakness or tear in the abdominal muscles. 80 per cent of hernias are commonly found in the groin area. These are referred to as inguinal hernias.
At the onset, only the inner lining of the abdomen pushes through the weakened area of the abdominal wall and slowly forms a small, balloon-like sac.
There are two main types of inguinal hernias – indirect and direct inguinal hernias. In young and fit men, indirect hernias are more common. The best thing you can do to prevent a hernia is to stay healthy.
Here are some ways you can do that:
1. Practise good nutrition.
It’ll help you avoid the constipation that can lead to straining during a bowel movement. It’ll also help keep your muscles healthy.
2. Don’t smoke.
If you do, quit. Chronic coughing from lung irritation can put you at increased risk for a hernia. It can also cause one to recur.
3. Do regular, gentle exercises.
It will tone and strengthen your abdominal muscles. (Time to try these 4 Best Abs Exercise You’re Not Doing.)
4. Maintain a healthy weight.
If you are overweight, try to lose some weight to ease the pressure on your abdominal muscles. Use proper lifting techniques and avoid lifting weights that are too heavy for you.
