You could be piling it on for reasons that you don't even realise. We've narrowed it to four reasons why you're still fat and the solutions that will bust all those blubbery excuses.
THE PROBLEM: GENETICS The reason why some people put on weight while others with a similar lifestyle stay slim may be because of a “fat” gene, say British scientists. People who inherit one version of the gene are 70 per cent more likely to be obese and can also have about 15 per cent more body fat. FIX IT: “Building muscles with regular weight training can boost our basal metabolic rate by as much as 15 per cent,” says Dr Alvin Nam from Dr Richard Choo and Partners. Muscle burns more calories than other body tissue, even when you’re not moving. “Sustained, high-intensity exercise can help a person burn more calories for several hours afterwards,” he adds. THE PROBLEM: YOU'RE GETTING OLD Many people have noticed that it becomes harder to stay lean as they age. “Our metabolic rate drops as we age, partly because we lose a small amount of muscle each year,” says Dr Nam. “People who eat less as they grow older will also experience a fall in their metabolic rate.” FIX IT: Don’t go hungry. Pack your diet with nutrient dense food and lots of vitamins and minerals, says Dr Nam. Ageing does not inevitably cause a drop in metabolic rate, rather, it’s your lifestyle that does. THE PROBLEM: IRREGULAR MEALS Eating irregularly causes your metabolic rate to slow down. “Our thyroid hormone levels start to drop within hours of eating a meal, and so metabolism slows,” says Dr Nam. So even when you eat less, your body could end up storing more... as fat. FIX IT: The most effective way to control your weight is with a sensible, calorie-controlled diet that permits all kinds of food. “As long as the overall calorie total is within desirable limits, your diet should comprise of nutrient-dense food such as fruits, vegetables, lean meats, oily fish, whole grains, beans and nuts,” says Dr Nam. THE PROBLEM: YOU'RE LAZY!
Getting the maid to do the housework and wash your car while you vegetate in front of the TV reduces the amount of fat-shredding muscle tissue you have and cause your metabolism to dip, says Dr Ben Tan, head and senior consultant sports physician at Changi General Hospital. FIX IT: “Increasing daily incidental physical activities like walking up the stairs and doing the housework will help burn excess calories and increase your metabolic rate,” says Dr Tan. So learn some mopping drills pronto!
