Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) looks at the proportion of fat stored on your waist, hips and buttocks. People with extra weight located around the middle are at a higher risk of suffering from heart disease and diabetes compared to those who carry extra weight around their hips and thighs. A waist circumference over 40 inches for guys may increase the risk further. A ratio of 0.90 or less is considered safe for men, and 0.8 for women. WHRs of 1.0 or above are considered "at risk".
To measure your waist circumference: Using a tape, measure your waist at the smallest circumference of your natural waist, usually just above the belly button.
To measure your hip circumference: Measure your hips from the widest part of your buttocks.
