Styles That Turn Her On
KEEP AN ICONIC FALL-BACK
“I like a man in a well-fitting grey suit, white shirt, no tie and collar unbuttoned – Don Draper’s end-of-the-day look,” says Aileen Lalor, associate editor of Female, who’s watching a lot of Mad Men right now.
MAKE A WINNING IMPRESSION
How you dress says something about you. “I like men who look polished and smart,” says Sasha Gonzales, editor of Seventeen. “A guy who shows that he cares about his appearance is keen to make a good impression – and is usually successful at it.” The formula: a crisp, clean shirt with tailored pants and leather shoes. “He should also be clean-shaven and smell nice,” Gonzales says.
DON’T TRY TOO HARD
Women want us to dress well – without being overly conscious of our appearance. “When a man pays too much attention to his clothes, it means he’s not paying enough attention to me,” says Chiquit Torrente, writer of Home & Decor. So, do your homework. Try out your clothes before you wear them to go out. That way, you’ll know what works on you, and not have to give it another thought when you’re with her.
PUT SOME THOUGHT INTO IT
While she’s all dolled up, you’re sporting just your jeans and a T-shirt. “My husband and I experience these mismatches quite often,” says Gracia Chiang, sub-editor at SPH Magazines. “If we’re going out, we must at least agree on the level of formality of our clothes.” The simple solution: Just ask her what she’ll be wearing before you decide on what you’ll wear.
SOME LIKE IT ROUGH
“Men must be men,” says Eileen Lee, assistant manager, regional marketing, Brand’s. “I like a man who can be a little scruffy, while appearing well put together.” The point is to look good without looking like you’ve put in more effort than she did in getting ready.
Long-sleeved T-shirt $29.90, Uniqlo; Shirt $249, Ben Sherman; Synthetic leather jacket $159, Pull and Bear; Trousers $549, Pringle of Scotland; Watch $447, Ingersoll; Next to him Ladies Fragrance Kenzoamour $125 (85ml), Robinsons Raffles City.
Your fail-safe selection of neutrals is actually fine for most women. However, for an added advantage, “experiment with bold colours,” says Lisa Twang, features writer of Shape. “Move away from the usual blues, browns and blacks. A guy looks really good if he can pull off some colour.”
