Murphy's Law never fails to deliver; two days before your big date and the semblance of an angry pimple is starting to appear on your nose. Don't let acne -- or bad breath, or body odour -- wreck your love life. Fix those grooming emergencies with these handy tips.
Pimple Attack
The trick is to zap your zit at night and then go to sleep, says Dr Adnan Nasir, director of dermatology at Wake Research Associates. Here’s how: Soak a washcloth in hot water and apply pressure to the spot for one minute. The moist heat should melt the sebum clogging your pores. Next, apply 10 per cent benzoyl peroxide cream, available over the counter, to kill bacteria and dry out the site. Finally, cover your zit with a bandage (try 3M Nexcare Acne Patch). This ensures the peroxide works all night. When you wake up, your blemish will be 50 to 75 per cent healed, if it’s not totally gone, says Dr Nasir.
Bad Breath
Brush your tongue. Doing so reduces mouth odour by 75 percent, whereas brushing the teeth reduces it by only 25 percent. Combining the two methods is best. That approach reduces odour by 85 percent.
On the night of your date, pack some sugar-free mints. Sugary mints may actually worsen your problem because they allow the bad breath-causing bacteria in your mouth to fester.
Razor Burns
Alcohol can irritate freshly shaven skin, which worsens redness and itch. Instead, gently run an ice cube over the raw, shaven area to soothe it. After that, gently pat dry with a towel and you’re good to go.
Cruddy Nails
Surveys have shown that women often judge men by the state of their fingernails. Make sure yours don’t frighten old ladies (or young ones) by investing in a good manicure set. And always cut nails squarely across the top. Never trim the sides, as this can lead to painful hangnails.
Tired Skin
An air-conditioned office environment, and working long hours could result in tired-looking skin. That fatigue will show when you meet her for coffee. First, use a moist napkin to wipe off dirt and grease. Use a bottle of facial toner to give yourself an instant perk-me-up. Keep one handy in your drawer at the office.
Body Odour
Always pack wet wipes with you. Wipe your armpits to get rid of odour-causing bacteria before reapplying your cologne. If you already have a BO problem to begin with, use deodorant body paper instead. These easy-to-use products are available at most convenience stalls and supermarkets.
