For pan-Asian girl group, Blush, fame has been a whirlwind journey so far as they try and make their mark on the music scene. Featuring members who hail from Japan, Korea, Philippines, China and India, they've often been dubbed the Asian Spice Girls. But they're keen on establishing their own name, as Men's Health found out.
Blush is the fruit of a talent search across Asia called Project Lotus. The girls chosen by Project Lotus were hothoused in a training academy where they culled the participants down to 10 finalists. Out of these 10, five were eventually selected to form Blush. They are Alisha Budrani (India), Victoria Chan (Hong Kong), Natsuko Danjo (Japan), Angeli Flores (Philippines) and Ji Hae Lee from South Korea.
It is this Asian flavour they're trying to infuse in their sounds. "Our music uses influences from Asia and the globe. Current pop music is a fusion of House, Electronic, R & B, Funk, Rap, Hip Hop, and our music includes all those elements as well as adding a bit of Asian inspiration. But most importantly, we aren't trying to be anyone else - we are just Blush."
The group debuted at the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens in March this year to a capacity crowd of 50,000 and 250 million viewers internationally. They have since opened for Canadian pop star Justin Bieber and performed at the Men's Fashion Week finale party in Singapore as well. Their first single, Undivided, features rap royalty, Snoop Dogg.
The members of Blush seem quite humble, quickly dismissing the notion that they''re already famous. The girls admit that their priority right now is working hard on getting their music out and they're all coping with the attention they're starting to receive. As they tell us, "The attention takes a bit of getting used to. Especially today when people quickly go on the Internet with any of their thoughts or impressions - sometimes the feedback is hard to take, particularly if we don't think it's accurate. We do, however, appreciate constructive criticism and try to utilise this feedback in our performances."
Despite their dedication to their craft, Blush are just a group of girls out to have fun. When asked who's the hottest in the group, they replied "All of us!". Currently, all the members are single and with a busy jet-setting schedule like theirs, finding a guy is probably challenging. They did share that their idea of a fun date would be, well, fun. "No stress, no work, just fun times and fun conversations. We all enjoy a good sense of humour!"
