Q:
I'm 40, she's 25... What will my friends think?

You know the stereotypes your friends can’t help but have in the absence of any better information: She’s a wide-eyed, mini-skirted bimbo, and you’re being taken for a ride. I can tell that there must be a deeper bond between you and your new girlfriend, if it’s so important to you that your friends accept her. You’ll have to combat this stereotype by playing up her strengths, interests, and maturity.

The best setting is probably a dinner party, which will allow everyone to make proper conversation. In fact, while going out works just as well, holding the dinner in your home is a clear way to signal, “We are a couple” (and well synched enough to chop, marinate, and stir-fry all this stuff for you guys to eat).

Pepper the conversation with useful conversation starters that will allow your friends to relate to your gal on ideas that matter to them. For example, “Gail did volunteer work in Thailand, so I told her about your experiences in Burma, Jim.” Or, “Derek, you studied English in University, right? Rachel’s looking for a good recommendation.” Everyone will appreciate your efforts, and I’m sure your friends will come around.
