How To Date: Erica Ng - Star DJ Kaylova
BY KENNETH WEE
Erica (or DJ Kaylova) has spent the past two years leading the glamorous lifestyle we all wished we had: Training in Amsterdam at Pioneer DJ School (yes, that one), living in Paris for a bit, and then securing residency behind the turntables at one of Shanghai’s biggest luxury clubs for seven months. Erica has only recently returned home to Singapore, where she ushered in the new year DJ-ing to the hordes at Siloso Beach alongside Dutch DJ Don Diablo (who created the official theme song for the video game Batman: Arkham Origins).
Plus, she’s single. (“Best part of being single,” she says, “is freedom.”) And will also probably be celebrating her 25th birthday here, which gives you the perfect chance to bump into – and have a shot at impressing – her.
BE BOLD, NOT BRASH
“Don’t just stand around looking at me. It’s okay to approach me in between sets. I like talking to people, getting to know them and what they think about the music. That said, guys should also respect a woman’s personal space and not sit too close or touch us. That’s trying too hard.”
START BY GETTING ACQUAINTED
“Always establish a friendship first. Saying ‘I really like you, can I take you out on a date? Do you like flowers?’ before we even know each other is moving too fast.”
GOOD CONVERSATIONS, GOOD DATE
“Worst hang-out ever was with a guy who asked me out many times although I wasn’t initially interested in him. But he was really sincere, so I finally agreed. We watched a movie and had dinner, and throughout the date, I was the only one talking. He was too shy, too nervous.”
SWEEP HER OFF HER FEET
“The best date, on the other hand, was with a guy who brought me to Thailand on an impromptu trip. There wasn’t anything special planned. We just winged it.”
“When is it appropriate to talk about sex? Wait for a signal from the girl. For example, she allows you to hold her hand and get close to her, and if you move in to kiss her, she kisses you back. It’s usually quite obvious. You can tell if a girl’s feeling uncomfortable, especially if she moves away. If you can’t, you aren’t paying attention.”
PLAY HARD, LIVE HEALTHY
“You don’t need to have a fabulous body, but you definitely should take care of your health. In the industry I work in, guys usually drink too much. I don’t like that kind of stuff. I go to the gym often, and try to cook at least two out of three meals a day.”
SECOND CHANCES, BUT NO MORE
“There can be many reasons if a guy cheats on me. Humans can be complex. It could also be my fault. I’d want him to talk to me, and if it’s reasonable, I’ll accept it – but only for this one time.”
GOTTA LIKE MUSIC
“I think it’s weird if people don’t like music. If he doesn’t fancy the music that I like, I’d be a little sad but I’d understand. Hopefully, he likes my music – but that’s not a must.”
