Knowing if a woman really means what she says isn’t rocket science, says clinical sexologist and Men’s Health advisory board member Dr Martha Lee. “You can develop a keen awareness of non-verbal cues by looking out for the little signs,” she says. You can tell a lot by simply looking at her lips.
DOES SHE REALLY LIKE YOUR JOKES?
If you can’t tell whether her sides are really splitting, then she might just be humouring you. Dr Mark Frank, professor of communication at the University of Buffalo in the US, advises looking for the “Duchenne” smile – the corners of her lips will be turned up, her cheeks will be pulled high and the skin around the eyes creased with delight.
“She can try and fake the crinkly skin around the eyes, but it will look squinty rather than happy,” he says. Adds Dr Lee: “If you detect a small smirk or tiny smile when she says you’re funny, then the truth is that you’re probably not that funny at all.”
IS SHE MAD AT YOU?
“One of the earliest signs of anger is a slight pressing and narrowing of the lips,” says Dr Frank. “This might also signal a subconscious attempt to prevent herself from speaking out,” adds Dr Lee. “She’s keeping in what she feels to avoid hurting you, or trying to avoid saying something she might regret later.”
Also, pay attention to the overall symmetry of her features. “Contempt is revealed when only one lip corner is tightened,” Dr Frank explains. Disgust is characterised by nose-wrinkling and a raising of the upper lip.
IS SHE LYING?
“When she’s trying to suppress the fear most people feel when lying, her lips will stretch flat across her face in a line,” says Maureen O’Sullivan, psychology professor at the University of San Francisco. If she looks like she’s trying too hard to remain nonchalant, maybe it’s time to start questioning whether she really is “just friends” with that guy from sales.
IS SHE EVEN LISTENING TO YOU?
Telltale clues she’s not saying what she genuinely means are if she has a crooked smile during a bland story, or if the timing of her smile is off. “If her smile flashes across her face too quickly, or lingers too long, it’s a good sign she’s actually thinking of something else,” says O’Sullivan.
