Quitting doesn’t equate to losing, especially if you’re talking about a dropping a habit that is affecting your health and happiness. Quit cigarettes, fast food, bad sex and spending long hours in the office; we’ve got the solutions to help you regain control of your life.
Quit Fast Food
Too much fast food can lead to mood swings. “Balancing blood sugar is the quickest way to improve mood with food,” says UK-based nutritionist Azmina Govindji. “Cut down on sugary foods and drinks, and refined products such as white bread and pasta. These foods spike a sugar rush and subsequent crash that leaves you feeling tired and low. Choose blood sugar-levelling whole grains, fruit, vegetables and pulses instead.” If you eat junk, you’ll feel rubbish.
Quit "Dropping The Ball"
If you find yourself often forgetting important tasks to complete, write them down! Putting your to-do list in black-and-white improves critical thinking and understanding, and leaves you 33 per cent more likely to follow up, due to an increased sense of accountability, reports a study by the Dominican University of California. Besides the old-fashioned pen-and-paper route, go new school and download Wunderlist, a smartphone app that helps you handle your daily tasks more efficiently.
Quit Staying Late At Work
Simply waking up one hour earlier each day during the work week will give you 5 extra hours per week, which works out to 32 ½ days in a year to accomplish whatever you “can’t get done.” Don’t try staying up later at night, though. Time-management experts say most people find it easier to be more productive in the morning than late at night.
You can also squeeze in a lunchtime workout to get more work done during the day. Exercise physiologists say lunch-break exercisers reported 50 per cent fewer afternoon slumps and improved productivity by a quarter. Combine full-body moves – deadlifts, squats and lunges – with cardio intervals for 40 minutes.
Quit Wearing Size 40 Jeans
A University of Massachusetts study showed that men who skip their morning meals are four-and-a-half times more likely to have bulging bellies than those who don’t. So within an hour of waking, have a meal or protein shake with at least 250 calories. And the larger the morning meal, the leaner the midsection. But keep the meal’s size within reason: A 1,500-calorie plate of fried noodles is really two breakfasts, so cap your intake at 500 calories.
Quit Being Scrawny
If you want to get really, really big, do the exercises that are most likely to put on muscle where you don’t have it. On most men, this means the muscles on the back of your body. The deadlift builds the hamstrings, gluteals, lower back, and middle trapezius. To do it, squat over the bar with your heels flat on the floor and the bar up against your shins. Your thighs should be parallel with the floor, your torso upright, and your eyes looking straight ahead. Grab the bar with an overhand grip just a little beyond shoulder-width. Squeeze your shoulder blades together in back, and stand with the bar, keeping it as close to your legs as possible. If you keep your shoulder blades pulled back, you’ll build muscle in your middle back.
Quit Being The One To Always Ask For Sex
Why isn’t she initiating sex more often? “One of the reasons she may have stopped approaching you is because of her fear of rejection,” says Janice Hiller, a clinical psychologist specialising in psychosexual therapy. Men can usually weather sexual rejection – quickly planning the next seduction – but women fear it. So you’ll need to do what women do when they want sex: Send out subtle signals. This will create an atmosphere where she’s pretty sure she won’t be rejected. “That could be as simple as lounging around in a bathrobe after a shower, or dimming the lights and playing her favourite sexy music,” says Hiller. The key is in creating a relaxed but suggestive atmosphere conducive for the playing of your favourite game.

Don’t leave a bad workplace for a similarly lousy organisation. One of the most common reasons people look for a new position is because they are seeking a company with a work culture that suits their individual preferences better. During your interview, ask the Human Resource representative to describe the culture in that organisation. “Company websites and marketing material will give you a very positive, glossy overview of an organisation’s working culture,” says Craig Brewer, manager for Core Banking: Finance, Operations, Risk Management & Audit, Hudson Singapore. “Ask the interviewer this question to get his or her perspective on the company culture.”
Taking fewer coffee breaks may increase your odds of quitting smoking. Your kopi-and-cigarette routine may have developed into a "learned habit" that makes you crave a smoke whenever you sit down to sip. So if that’s the case, less coffee, less chance you’ll light up.
