...and quite possibly, one of these top 5 killer diseases will be the cause. To save yourself from these man-killers, read on and learn how you can protect yourself.

Diabetes
Diabetes is a failure of insulin regulation by the body. Type-2 diabetes is more common and usually affects the overweight. Without insulin, glucose build-up in the blood can lead to blindness, kidney failure or even a heart attack.
Beat It “Stay active,” says Dr Edward Pratt, consultant endocrinologist at Changi General Hospital. “Some diabetes-stricken patients suffer no consequences for years because they lead a healthy lifestyle and take their medication.” And watch your weight by balancing your caloric intake and energy expenditure to maintain satisfactory blood glucose levels.

Lung Cancer
Lung canceris an insiduous disease that slowly disables healthy tissue, eventually leading to failure of the organs. Very often, sufferers don't realise the severity of the problem until its too late. And smoking is – but of course – its biggest known cause.
Beat It Get yourself checked if your cough is persistent and there's blood in your sputum or phlegm. And avoid all forms of tobacco smoke. If you're trying to quit, visit HPB's Quitline for help.

Colorectal Cancer
Colorectal cancer destroys healthy intestinal cells and can spread to other parts of the body. It may exhibit no symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage, says Dr Donald Poon, a medical oncology consultant at the National Cancer Centre of Singapore. People with hereditary colorectal cancer syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease are at greater risk of the disease.
Beat It Go for regular screenings and watch your diet. Dr Poon takes at least two servings of fruit daily, and mushrooms and curry might also ward off colorectal cancer. “An anti-cholesterol drug called statin is found in black oyster mushrooms,” he says. “Curcumin in curry has been known to have a preventative effect too.”

Heart Attack
“Cholesterol deposits can slowly build up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle,” says Clinical Associate Professor Yeo Tiong Cheng, senior consultant in the Cardiac Department at National University Hospital. “A heart attack occurs when the plaque ruptures, forming a blood clot that cuts off the blood supply to the heart.”
Beat It For a start, avoid cholesterol-rich food whenever possible and consume oats, fish, green vegetables and fruits. “Exercise can also improve cardiovascular health, control your weight and lower your blood pressure – all risk factors for heart disease,” he says.

Prostrate Cancer
A prostate tumour can grow large enough to block the flow of urine from the body, leading to kidney failure and death from toxin accumulation. “Patients usually don’t display symptoms in the early stages,” says Dr Chua Wei Jin, associate consultant with the Department of Urology at National University Hospital. “When symptoms such as urinary problems or weight loss occurs, the cancer may have already progressed.”
Beat It Don't miss your yearly health screenings, especially if you're older than 40. Early detection can help stave off the disease; however, the biopsy procedure can be invasive.
