Q:
My shoulders sound like crunching granola. Should I worry?

If they’ve been snap-crackle-popping your whole life, you probably don’t need to worry. “But if it just started, limits mobility, or causes even a little pain, then see a doctor,” says Dr Nick DiNubile, an orthopedic surgeon and the author of FrameWork: Your 7-Step Program for Healthy Muscles, Bones and Joints. The noises can be a sign of damage to the rotator-cuff muscles or biceps tendons, or a labrum tear. Another cause: crepitus, resulting when two inflamed tendons or bursae (sacs of fluid that pad friction points) rub together during movement, according to US-based personal trainer Bill Hartman. It’s a common ailment as we age. Again, see a doc if you have pain or swelling.
