Your Liver At Risk

advertisement

It isn't just wild boozin' that's killing your liver. Your body's internal filter is also under attack by a slew of other silly things you do to yourself.

Casual Sex
Unprotected casual sex can lead to hepatitis B, the sexually-transmitted liver virus. So the next time you're in Bangkok or Batam, remember that some things are cheap for a bad reason. Ask your doctor for a Hep A and B jab if you insist on taking that risk (but why?), but for the record, these vaccinations won't protect you from STDs, HIV and other venereal acronyms.

Dodgy Tattoo Parlours
A tattoo makes you nine times more likely to contract hepatitis C – a devastating liver disease. If you absolutely must get her name tattooed on your left butt cheek, make sure it's at a reputable parlour that uses needles right out of sealed plastic packets. If not, we suggest you pull up your pants and run.

Alcohol
Your liver can fight through about six cans of mid-strength lager, according to research by the University of Massachusetts. Swill past that in one sitting and the first sign of liver cirrhosis kicks in. Don't worry, you don't have to give up brewsky altogether. Just go on “liver holidays” two to three days a week and drink protein shakes instead, suggests the National Cancer Centre in Tokyo. Whey packs a substance called glutamine, which helps your liver regenerate

Fast, Junk and Fried Food
Before you make an excuse for wolfing down that plate of mee goreng, listen: “Fat doesn’t just sit around your waist,” explains Dr Wright. “It collects in your liver too, causing a condition called non-alcoholic fatty disease.” Fortunately, studies from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, USA, show that bacteria primers like yoghurt help fix the nasty effects that junk food have on your liver. So stop pretending that you’re not home when the Yakult lady comes a-knockin’.

Drugs
Drugs like Ecstasy, steroids and even paracetamol also wreak havoc on your liver. So avoid the illegal ones, and as for the prescription meds, ask your doctor about the effects of your medication on your liver. If you’ve abused drugs in the past, taking Milk Thistle Extract supplements can repair some of the damage. (Try Herbal Plus Milk Thistle, $68.50 from GNC stores.)
