COLDS & FLU Prescription: Tai Chi
It might not give you the physique of Bruce Lee, but tai chi will help keep you fighting fit when the sniffles bug bites. Four months of tai chi three times a week was shown by University of California biologists to raise protection against common viruses by a massive 50 per cent.
TOOTHACHE Prescription: Spinning
That cardio kick could spare you the dentist’s chair, according to the Journal of Periodontology. In tests, men who got sweaty in the saddle for 45 minutes at least three times a week were 40 per cent less likely to develop tooth-rotting gum diseases than gym-phobes.
PERSISTENT HEADACHES Prescription: Yoga
“The most common cause of persistent headaches is postural problems,” explains osteopath Gavin Burt. In tests by the University of California, over 60 per cent of persistent sufferers were able to do away with medication after a three-month yoga course. HYPERTENSION Prescription: Weightlifting
“Regular exercise, including moderate weightlifting, provides many health benefits including the lowering of blood pressure,” says Sheldon Sheps, a hypertension specialist at the Mayo Clinic, US. He recommends lifting lighter weights and doing more reps. “Heavier weights require more strain, causing an increase in blood pressure,” he says. “Challenge your muscles with lighter weights by increasing your repetitions.”
MILD DEPRESSION Prescription: Brisk Walking
As your PE teacher used to say: Walk it off. Duke University research found that a daily 30-minute walk could be more powerful than Prozac. “Walking boosts the analgesic properties of the body’s natural pain-relieving endorphins,” says study
author John Bartholemew. A bit like alcohol, but with the opposite effect.
BACK PAIN Prescription: Swimming
While perfecting the double-twist pike won’t please your osteopath, making gentler waves could just be the ticket for your bad back. “Smooth strokes that don’t involve twisting are ideal,” says Sharon Morrison, sports physio with the England rugby team. Her suggestions: The front crawl and backstroke.
