You can start by not printing your e-mails. According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), the highest recycling rates of materials in Singapore comprise metal (up to 91 per cent), wood (52 per cent) and paper (51 per cent). Incidentally, glass (9 per cent) and plastic (11 per cent) are among the materials with the lowest rates. “The economics of collecting and recycling certain kinds of waste are more favourable, hence the higher rates of recycling,” says Ong Seng Eng, director of Resource Conservation at the NEA. So unless you work in a steel or timber mill, the best way to begin your Gaia project is to recycle as much paper as possible – newspapers, magazines, newsletters, shredded documents, whatever. If your office doesn’t have recycling facilities, start one or visit the NEA website at www.nea.gov.sg/cms/rcd/locations/map.html for a list of the recycling bins in Singapore. Don’t neglect the other kinds of materials that can be recycled as well (plastics, glass, cans) because every bit counts, you treehugger, you.
