In the Future, You'll Be Able to Charge Your Phone in Seconds

Phone charging too slowly? You won't have to worry about that in the future.

It’s no secret that charging your phone is a total pain. And, of course, it’s pretty much a given that you’ll get a low battery at a completely inconvenient time. After all, nobody wants to be that guy at the barbeque babysitting his charging phone inside while everyone is living it up outside.

But now, scientists have discovered new technology that may make phone charging of the future no big deal. Researchers from Drexel University created a new battery electrode design that would allow you to charge your phone in seconds.

For their research, which is published in the journal Nature Energy, researchers created a new battery-like prototype from a highly conductive, two-dimensional material called MXene. Their new design could make standard batteries just as fast as supercapacitors, which are used to provide energy fast. (Supercapacitors are used for camera flashes, if that helps put things into perspective.)

The study’s researchers were able to charge thin MXene electrodes in tens of milliseconds, which can clear the way for a total revolution of the battery industry. (No word yet if you’ll be able to charge your phone battery that fast, but even doing it anywhere near that is better that what you’re dealing with now.)

Apparently, this super-speedy charging comes down to design. Electrodes are crucial parts of batteries that store energy during charging and dole it out when it’s needed. Electrodes in batteries have ports where charge is stored, called “redox active sites,” and the new design has more ports. It also helps get energy to the battery faster, making the whole charging process quick and easy.

Obviously, this is just research at the moment, but the study’s scientists say that in the future you might be able to charge your car, laptop, and phone in a matter of seconds. Let that sink in for a moment. In the time it takes for you to do a few push-ups, your phone could be fully charged again. It’s a total game-changer.
