Q:
I frequently get the hiccups. How do I stop them?

Try holding your breath, gasping, breathing into a paper bag, mental distraction, drinking water quickly or eating a teaspoon of sugar. These are common home remedies for hiccups, which are sudden, involuntary contractions of the diaphragm muscle. Common hiccups in adults are usually self-limiting and not dangerous. However, if you suffer from severe, persistent hiccups that last for hours or days, consult a doctor as soon as possible, as it may indicate an underlying medical problem. You may require medication or, in an extreme case, surgery.
