Q:
I’m thinking of getting a tattoo. Any advice?

If you must, get one you won’t regret. (That rules out the name of your current squeeze.) Also, go for one in dark blue or black because they’re easier to remove, says Dr Gerard Tan, an aesthetic doctor at Neuglow. “Yellow, pastel, red and green pigments respond poorly or incompletely to laser treatment,”he says. This might be due to the different light absorption rates of different coloured tattoo pigments, according to a study published in the journal Dermatologic Surgery.

What’s more, coloured and pastel inks usually contain iron or titanium oxides that may change to a grey slate or black colour during removal, he adds – not pretty. In fact, such metallic inks can give 15 to 20 per cent of patients skin allergies, says Dr Loo Han Woen, an aesthetic doctor at Thomson Aesthetics Centre.
