Can smoking really suppress one’s appetite?

Yes, nicotine in cigarettes can interfere with the release of the insulin hormone. When this function is suppressed, the body slows down the production of digestive enzymes that trigger hunger pangs. Hence, people who quit smoking tend to eat more because the suppressant effect no longer exists. That said, don’t use smoking as an excuse to lose weight. If you plan on quitting, start a proper diet and exercise regime to manage the increase in appetite.
