Q:
Can I drink coffee after taking paracetamol?

advertisement

Caffeine is, in fact, added to some commercially available paracetamol tablets. Because it is a weak stimulant, this may enhance the pain-killing effects of paracetamol. However, according to a study at the University of Washington, mixing caffeine and paracetamol will create a potentially toxic interaction in the liver, as it triples the amount of toxic byproducts responsible for liver damage. As a result, the risk may be increased. However, the findings are preliminary and the research was performed only on bacteria and animals. More research would be required to prove danger to humans. Moreover, it would take a huge intake of coffee, together with a normal dose of paracetamol, to cause such an effect. The bottom line is that it is good to limit the amount of coffee or caffeinated products while taking paracetamol.
