Am I getting a better workout by running in the midday heat?
It’ll feel tougher, but it might not necessarily offer you a better workout. Besides the heat, the humidity plays a big role in the level of fatigue you’ll feel. Your rate of perspiration will increase and this subsequently causes your heart to pump faster, even though you may not be putting in extra effort. In other words, the increased heart rate may not necessarily relate to a direct increase in effort, so running in the heat may not offer greater training benefits.
Although it’s best to run in cooler conditions (at night or in the gym), it’s still essential to train under the same conditions as the race you’re preparing for (if your race falls in the afternoon).
